They Call Us Bible Thumpers
They call us Bible thumpers, hypocrites, and even fools. The unsaved have us pegged as hypocritical, much of which is in their minds. I know because I have been there, judging imperfections and petty sins of Christians to be the evidence of their “holier-than-thou” attitude and unworthiness to preach to me when the fact, much of the time, is simply the equality of us as sinners. Does this make me a Bible Thumper? We Christians are just sinners who have acknowledged our sin and need for a savior and have committed to the process of sanctification, and yet we “all fall in many ways” (James 3:2), “for the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do” (Galatians 5:17 ESV). We aren’t perfect, and the overwhelming difference between us and the unsaved is we know it.
Which is not to say that some Christians aren’t hypocrites, just that many know they are basically evil as the Bible says, and the reaction of non-Christians to our sin nature is to accuse us of judging them. This is why the unsaved call us hypocrites, but why do they call us a Bible thumper? And what is a bible thumper? Dictionary.com defines a Bible thumper as “an evangelist or other person who quotes the Bible frequently, especially as a means of exhortation or rebuke.” Unfortunately, this is what some of us do, to our own condemnation as Jesus Himself says in Matthew 7:1-5:
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
What is a Bible Thumper
A Bible thumper is a Christian that has not realized that his own flaws and the number one purpose of the Bible, which is not a pointing finger, but a mirror. The Bible is a mirror for the Christian to see, not only where he is missing the mark, but also the long path ahead. If we focus our eyes on that journey, and Jesus at the end as our example, we won’t have time for judging others. We will be too busy working on ourselves.
Why Do They Call Us Bible Thumpers?
They call us Bible thumpers because “all truth and no love is hypocrisy; all love and no truth is brutality” (James MacDonald). If we use our Bible to beat people over the head to show how wrong they are, that is brutality. When we use the Bible to accuse, that is brutal because the Bible is for us. On the other hand when we choose all love, refusing to bring the light of the truth to bear on the sinful nature and the path where that choice leads, is brutality in the sense that we are allowing people to proceed to their own destruction even though we have the answer of how to be saved from the coming wrath.
