Many Christians walk around, proclaiming Christ, yet never go any deeper than Sunday morning sermons. I see and know my relationship with God as it is now – deep, personal, satisfying, and freeing, more wonderful than anything I have ever known. But this relationship is newly formed with regards to the length of my life up until now. It began more than 10 years ago, but in comparison to my more than 50 years on Earth, it is a short-term relationship as of now – the experience of Power from on high. Jesus is our perfect foundation, but there is more, so don’t stop there.
I think back on the rest of my life with regards to faith, and I wonder why it took so long to come to this place. If I examine the evidence, I can begin to see where my path diverged from the Christian world I was living in and began to follow in earnest the steps of the Lord. And not because I am super-spiritual but curious about this Power from on high. God has a plan for your life.
The Power of the Trinity
In the past, I see my footprints on one side of the path, and the Lord’s on the other, as if we are walking parallel to one another but not together. Something is missing, but what? I believed in God, and I knew about Jesus, but not as an integral part of my life. So, after following this course, separate but unaware, for more than 40 years, what has made the difference? One thing that has made a huge difference is reading my Bible.
God is the Father and Jesus is the Son. God is in Heaven; Jesus came to earth then returned there. They are present but removed somehow, but by our lack of completion, not theirs. It is the third person of the Trinity that changes everything – the Power from on high. Without the Holy Spirit our connection is weaker, just as if we were to turn off a third of the lights in our house at night – the brightness is dimmed and we cannot see as clearly.
Shine the Light
It is what endues us with Power from on high, just as it did the disciples and the others who received the Power after the laying on of hands. These are Bible Truths for anyone to find. Without it we are like a light that is unplugged – it has no power. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we become plugged into the source of light in a divine appointment.
I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with Power from on high.”Luke 24:49
When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:14-17
On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:5-6
Many churches and Christians speak about the “baptism of the Spirit,” in which some believe and some do not. But it is hard to refute when the Bible is so clear about it, and we know that all scripture is given by inspiration of God. I think the sticking point is perhaps what we call “speaking in tongues,” but the Bible also speaks of this as a real manifestation. God does not change. Sometimes we refute what we can’t or don’t understand, sometimes in fear and sometimes in ignorance.
As Ye Have Received
But the baptism of the Spirit, the Power from on high, is more than speaking in tongues. There are many Christians who do not speak in tongues that do mighty things for the Lord and clearly operate in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives words of knowledge and prophesies. Many times the Lord has given me a message for someone or sent me to pass on a word from Him – things I had no way of knowing, and yet I have never spoken in tongues. Biblical wisdom comes from God.
The other mistake, then, is proclaiming that the Power from on high only comes after receiving the gift of tongues as an outward sign. This is where we hurt people, even if it is unintentional. To say that they, who have not tongues, cannot operate in the Spirit can crush something God is trying to do.
Each person’s journey with the Lord is personal. You must live yours as I live mine, holding on to Jesus, eagerly desiring more intimacy through the Holy Spirit, to never be satisfied with less and always reaching for more.
It is to take your personal relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost deeper until you are drowning in the power and majesty that is the great I Am and always seeking more. That’s why I love the Bible.
