Rejecting the Bible
Rejecting the Bible and refusing to believe in either God or the Bible is setting oneself up for condemnation on the Day of the Lord when Christ returns.
9-12 The Anarchist’s coming is all Satan’s work. All his power and signs and miracles are fake, evil sleight of hand that plays to the gallery of those who hate the truth that could save them. And since they’re so obsessed with evil, God rubs their noses in it—gives them what they want. Since they refuse to trust truth [rejecting the Bible], they’re banished to their chosen world of lies and illusions. 2 Thessalonians 2-12 (MSG)
There is going to come a time when it’s too late to turn from evil and believe. Those who choose evil will be condemned for eternity for rejecting the Bible and God; they had their chance. This is for those who have never believed and those who have believed but turned from the truth and rejected the Bible and God.
One of the more publicized “turnings from the truth” and rejecting the Bible is Pastor Jerry DeWitt, former pastor in Louisiana turned atheist, now rejecting the Bible and God. If you read some of what he has said in interviews, it obvious who is holding the reigns and luring him away from the faith. It is not hard to see the truth at all. As I read his words, through the filter of the Holy Spirit, the truth is very obvious but I know Satan is deception personified, so I am not surprised at how many he tricks. It is surprising, but shouldn’t be, how far his reach has become as we face the last days before Christ’s return. Here is a portion of his story as told to Robert Worth of the New York Times Magazine:
“…He [DeWitt] discovered that a cottage industry of atheist outreach groups had grown up in the past few years. Within days, he joined an online network called the Clergy Project, created for clerics who no longer believe in God and want to communicate anonymously through a secure Web site. DeWitt began e-mailing with dozens of fellow apostates every day and eventually joined another new network called Recovering from Religion, intended to help people extricate themselves from evangelical Christianity.”
Although he believed in the beginning that the atheist movement was small, what he discovered was atheist organizations throughout the country, including the “Bible Belt” and places where DeWitt had once preached in his days as an itinerant preacher. It wasn’t long before he was back on the road again, this time as an itinerant atheist, to speak about his “reverse-conversion,” the “the five stages of disbelief,” and rejecting the Bible and God.
Although DeWitt was new to the movement, he quickly became a “celebrity atheist,” with a large following on Twitter and facebook. DeWitt calls the atheist movement in America “a brand-new industry” with a lot of momentum.
Solomon said, “There is nothing new under the sun,” and indeed he is right. It’s not a “brand new industry.” But most likely it is gaining momentum as he said. Paul said to Timothy, “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NIV)
It is as old as the Garden of Eden. Satan is the one who lures people away from the faith, sometimes just to convert as many as he can, sometimes to thwart the work of God. The lure of Satan is strong; his tricks are impressive like the magicians in Egypt who performed their fake miracles to equal the feats Moses and Aaron performed with the staff.
In Luke 9:62 “Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
