Ready Your Bible Daily

Read Your Bible Daily

If you go to church every Sunday and listen to a sermon based on the Bible, why should you read your Bible daily?  “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).  You cannot expect an hour sermon to give you the strength you need every day.  Every day you will face challenging circumstances, trials, and temptations.   The psalmist says in Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”  Unless you read your Bible daily you are not hiding His word in your heart.

Think of this also.  Even when you’re in church, you are only getting a few verses that pertain to the sermon; the rest is just a lesson.  While it defiantly provides study about the things of God, you still need to read your Bible daily to make sense of what is being taught.  If you are already familiar with the text and have formed your own opinion, then the sermon is there to encourage you and bear witness with you in what God is trying to say to you.

The Bible is God’s word to all of us; it reveals His character, His love, and His message.  “The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple” (Psalm 19:7).  If you don’t read your Bible daily, you will not be equipped with the weapons to fight the war that is going on around you in the spiritual realm and be able to defend yourself.  “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

If you don’t read your Bible daily you will not have God’s strength to guide you every day.  If you hide His word in your heart, when the time comes that you need to draw on God’s word for the situation in which you find yourself, the Holy Spirit will bring to your mind those things you know that pertain to what is happening to you at that exact moment.

The Bible is God’s strength, available to everyone.  It offers life in place of death, faith instead of fear, and eternity with God rather than eternity in outer darkness.  The Bible is a tool through which the Holy Spirit works.  If you read your Bible daily, you will recognize the Holy Spirit working in and counseling you.  If you do not have the word of God hidden in your heart, when the Holy Spirit speaks, you will not hear.  When the answer pops up in your mind you regard it as your own cleverness which will never bring the comfort and reality of the one true God completely present and completely involved in your daily struggles.

Why is that important?  It is important to your spiritual well being.  When you are Daniel facing the lions there is something very comforting to know He is with you, because at that moment He whispers verses in your ear and you know that all will be well with your soul.  Read your Bible daily as protection, encouragement, and strength, that the Lord may go with you everywhere you go.
