Mark Chapter 9 Better to Enter Heaven with One Eye
And if your eye offends you, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes to be cast into hell fire where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark Chapter 9 :47-48
Today I am thinking of those who once were on fire for God but now are stepping back into the world, those whose speech was once seasoned with the things of God, who could not go fifteen minutes without speaking His name or telling of His attributes and praising His blessings, but now can go for hours or even days without mentioning Him at all. How does this happen? And how do I, as one who dearly loves Him now, avoid the same fate? I reflect on Mark Chapter 9.
Our pastor is fond of saying that “sin is fun – for a season”. So beware of stepping into the world “just a little”. In Song of Solomon, chapter 2, he says it’s “the little foxes that spoil the vine” and Romans 12:2 says “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will”. It is tempting when we are with our non-Christian friends to go along with the crowd, but we put ourselves in danger when we do. Jesus said if we are ashamed of Him before men, He will be ashamed of us before His Father in Heaven.
As in Mark Chapter 9, we must guard our hearts with all of our being, lest we wake up one day far away from where we started and wonder, how did we get here? In the parable of the prodigal son, Jesus tells of the son who demanded his inheritance and when he received it, he left home, spent all his money and wound up in the pig pen, wondering how on earth he got there, so far from home and family and safety and comfort. He was in a prison of his own making, yet when he finally came home, humbled, he found forgiveness and not condemnation, acceptance and not rejection.
So do not be like the world, with its evil speech and the lusts of the flesh. Jesus said we should be glad when we are persecuted for his sake. Do not be moved by those who think you are a “religious fanatic” and that you “take this Jesus stuff way too seriously”. Better to enter Heaven as a fanatic than to be cast into Hell as lukewarm. The safety and security of following Jesus cannot be compared with anything in the world. Jesus said, “…everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” Matthew 19:29 (NIV)
The only thing to be gained by travelling the broad road is destruction and eternal separation from God. The god of this age, Satan, has made the things of the flesh seem attractive that he might lead as many as he can astray. Loving Jesus is the greatest adventure with much more gain that the way of the world.
Guard your hearts for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23
